Self Assessment guide
The £1,000 trading allowance explained. What counts as income. When and how to register.
The £1,000 trading allowance — do you need to declare?
If your total trading income (gross sales, before any deductions) is under £1,000 in a tax year, you do not need to declare it to HMRC or file a Self Assessment return for that income.
If it is over £1,000, you must register for Self Assessment and declare the income. You can either claim the trading allowance (deduct £1,000 flat) or deduct your actual expenses — whichever is higher.
This template tracks both so you always know which side of the line you are on.
