What makes this different from a spreadsheet
The Income Log and Expense Log are linked to your MTD Quarterly Submissions database. When you tag an income entry to Q1, the Q1 total updates automatically. No manual addition. No pivot tables. No end-of-year scramble to total everything up.
This is what a relational Notion database does that no spreadsheet can replicate without formulas written by a developer.
Who this is for
- + UK sole traders and freelancers earning £15,000–£150,000
- + Anyone approaching Making Tax Digital threshold (over £50,000 from April 2026)
- + Freelancers who want to be audit-ready all year, not just in January
- + Anyone who wants their quarterly income and expense totals ready to hand to an accountant
What this is not
This template handles record-keeping and tracking. It does not submit to HMRC — use your accountant or MTD-compatible software for the actual submission.
Think of it as your organised source of truth that makes every interaction with your accountant faster and cheaper.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax — what you need to know
MTD for Income Tax launched in April 2026. If your total income from self-employment and/or property is over £50,000, you are now required to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC.
This threshold drops to £30,000 in April 2027. If you are below £50,000 now, plan accordingly.
This template tracks all five MTD submissions per tax year — Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, and the Final Declaration — with deadlines, status, and confirmation references.
